The School of Social Sciences, The Assam Kaziranga University organized a workshop on "Basic Counselling Skills in the practice of Social Work Profession" on 22th June 2021 in collaboration with COSEHDA (COMMITTEE ON SOCIO ECONOMIC AND HEALTH DEVELOPMENT ASSAM). COSEHDA is a Guwahati based NGO that primarily focuses on creating a drug free society by creating awareness among people about the problems created by drug addiction. The key speakers of the workshop were - Mr. Dipankar Khataniar who is a Senior Counselor, Revival Wellness Society (Rehabilitation Unit) Assam, and Miss Niharika Hazarika who is a Counselor at Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), COSEHDA, Khetri. Miss Anamriya Baruah of COSEHDA also joined the workshop and interacted with the students of the school.
The workshop dealt with some of the key aspects related to counselling and its importance in the social work profession in a detailed manner. What is counselling; what are the various techniques of counselling; and how to use these techniques in the context of social work profession – these were some of the key focus areas of discussion in the workshop where the key speakers explained the concepts with suitable examples to the participants. The speakers also highlighted the various types of counselling provided by COSEHDA.
A total of 80 plus students participated in the workshop and engaged in a meaningful discussion with the speakers with their queries and questions. The workshop was a successful one with the support provided by COSEHDA, the students of school of social sciences and faculty members.
