An eminent Professor in Social Work and an Ex-member of UGC Syllabus Review Committee Prof Sukla Deb Kanungo addressed to the students of Social Work and Sociology of Kaziranga University on the Value System in Social Work Profession on 2nd March in the SET Seminar Hall.
A retired Professor from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, she is 75 years old, but still very active in the Social Work practices and mentoring students, teachers and practitioners in this field. Prof Kanungo was felicitated by Prof P G Ramesh, Dean , Centre of Excellence, Prof Braja Mishra, Dean, School of Social Sciences and other faculty members of the School of Social Sciences.
In her talk, she outlined the importance of value system and ethics in any profession, which gives legitimacy and authority to practice the profession. Though Professional Social Work values initially emerged from the Western World, over a period of time it has been consciously blended and grown with Indian values and traditonal knowledge system. She quoted Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore , who said, " There is nothing more dangerous than inexpertise service. If one wants to serve, one must learn."
She further said that multi-disciplinary knowledge, humility (freeodm from arrogance) and commitment to profession can only take the profession to a higher level.
The talk was concluded with a brief question answer session. Dr Saurabhi Sarmah, Asst Professor, proposed a vote of thanks to Prof Kanungo on behalf of the university.
