Webinar on "Impact of Covid-19 on daily wage earners in India"

The School of Social Sciences, The Assam Kaziranga University organized a webinar on the "Impact of Covid 19 on daily wage earners in India" on 11thMay, 2021 from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

The key speaker of the webinar was Mr. Preetom Jyoti Sarma who is the co-founder of two Jorhat based organizations namely "AGRONI" and "SAHAJATRI" which primarily work for academic progress and social development in the rural areas of Assam. Mr. Sarma is currently working in the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. Academics, marketing and rural development are some of his key interest areas.

In his presentation, the speaker focused on the following key aspects pertaining to the lives of daily wage earners in India - 

  • Attitude of the daily wage earners and their attitude towards life.
  • Their socio- economic concerns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Recommendations and suggestions to fight back with the adverse situations.

The speakers also shared relevant information about how to solve the problems faced by the daily wage earners and improve their livelihood. In this context, he had mentioned about inclusive labor policies and regulations, creation of Central Registry of daily wage earners, awareness on rural entrepreneurship among daily wage earners, formulation and implementation of sustainable livelihoods programs through area based community model to name a few, and how they can   help in tackling the problems to a certain extent.

In his speech, Mr. Sarma also mentioned that the problems faced by the daily wage earners in India are pre-existing; now it has become compounded with the outbreak of the pandemic

The webinar was quite useful for the students and the faculty members.  A total of 90 plus students participated in the webinar and engaged themselves in meaningful interaction with the speaker.
